The quarter windows on the 6th gen Camaro bother me

Since the 2016 Camaro has been announced, I’ve been trying to come to grips with its quarter windows. There’s something about them that’s just a bit off to me. They may well grow on me over time but right now every time I look at the new Camaro I can’t help but be bothered by the quarter windows.

Something about the back half of the Camaro’s roofline is both familiar and off-putting to me. The most obvious problem is that it looks like a flattened 1971-73 Mustang hardtop, minus the recessed rear window (a.k.a. tunnel backlight, according to Ford).

The last time a new car’s styling bugged me as much as the 6th gen Camaro’s quarter windows was the the 5th gen Honda Prelude. It just didn’t look nearly as good as the 4th gen and the headlights were weird.

This:

Was a terrible replacement for this:

Now that I think of it, the 6th gen Camaro also looks like a squashed 5th gen Prelude! No wonder it bothers me so much!

The whole car looks a little off to me proportion wise. Don’t get me wrong I think it looks good, but it just doesn’t work overall.

So:

?

I know, I’m being snide. It would be cool if it *were* set up like this, though.

It looks nothing like it, but with that color it reminds me of the a blue 2 series.

Extending quarter windows is the new thing. I’ve seen worse though.

Those windows are completely pointless. Actual transparent area is probably 15 square inches. With meaty trim behind it, you can only see through it from straight on. May as well have skipped them.

Flattened, but not that flattened.

Now it bothers me, too :(

I agree. I think it’s because they took the styling elements from the last one and transferred them over to the new one, but it’s a smaller, narrower platform. there’s also entirely too much metal and not enough glass above the rear wheels.

Yeah the lack of glass is really strange to my eye. I wonder what visibility is actually like. The hood seems a little short for the styling too.

Visibility was terrible on the last one. GM actually came out and said visibility still sucks on the new one and they don’t care because their customers told them the looks trump visibility.

I hate that stupid piece of black plastic on the Camry’s C-pillar.

Of the Camaro, Challenger, Mustang 21st century revisions the Camaro is the ugliest and by a large margin. It’s funny because the early Camaros were so hot looking but now, yeesh.

I couldn’t deal with that, I’m a function>form kind of guy.

Agreed 100%. It makes me think they had to shoehorn the design just to meet rollover safety requirements.

I rather like the facelifted 5th gen Camaro (2014-15), especially as a 1LE, ZL1 or Z28.

The new 2015-up Mustang is way better looking than the 2016-up Camaro.

On the Prelude it looks like they just swapped the headlight and tail lamp shapes from one gen to another.

Good point! They also made the newer one boxier and more upright.

I’m not feeling the pain.
